Ciclo de Zarzuelas 2017
El Ciclo de Zarzuelas 2017 at Teatro Romea of Murcia, starts the 19th of April.
Zarzuela (Spanish pronunciation: [θarˈθwela]) is a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung scenes, the latter incorporating operatic and popular song, as well as dance.
The etymology of the name is uncertain, but some propose it may derive from the name of a Royal hunting lodge, the Palacio de la Zarzuela near Madrid, where, allegedly, this type of entertainment was first presented to the court.
The palace was named after the place called “La Zarzuela” because of the profusion of brambles (zarzas) that grew there, and so the festivities held within the walls became known as “Zarzuelas”(from Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zarzuela).
Teatro Romea will offer its traditional Zarzuela Cycle 2017 framed within the wide program of activities of the Spring Festival of Murcia.

MADAME BUTTERFLY – TEATRO ROMEA MURCIA
For this opera Madame Butterfly, Puccini has drawn from two works: the story of Madame Butterfly (1898), Luther Long, dramatized by David Belasco, and novel Madame Chrysanthème.
The first version, with only two acts, was created on February 17, 1904, at La Scala in Milan.
However, given the poor reception, a second version was published in three acts, on May 28, 1904, at the Great Theater of Brescia. Finally, it was presented a third version, the final on 28 December 1906, at the Opéra Comique in Paris.
Exoticism, passion, hope and honor are present throughout this famous opera.
It is located in the town of Nagasaki in the early 20th century and tells the story of a young Japanese woman after a love affair with an American official.
Although this work is not known the immediate success at its premiere, at the moment, thanks to famous tunes like Come serums, One beautiful di vedremo, Dovunque al mondo and Con onor muore, is one of the operas the most represented and acclaimed by the public .
